025: Teaching Your Kids About Algorithms

Taking Back Joy Podcast • Episode #025: Teaching Your Kids About Algorithms

Navigating the online world as a grownup is scary on a good day. So how do we teach our kids how to use platforms such as YouTube and Google with caution? Because, let’s be real -  we can't stop them from seeing, viewing and engaging with these platforms forever, as much as we might like to.

A recent experience with my seven-year-old after his YouTube habits got a little out of hand saw me draw a line in the sand and have a serious chat with him. My purpose was to make him understand how algorithms work and how more often than not, these platforms aren’t the product - we are!

Afterwards, we established some new boundaries and ground rules (and his mood improved) and it got me thinking how this might benefit all my small business family peeps, because if this can help you better understand how algorithm-based platforms work, it can help you empower your kids with knowledge in a way that they can understand, as well as place ourselves in a better position of control when it comes to how we use and consume on these platforms.

Let's jump in!
